Open a cashier shift

Open a shift on the register before your first sale, and enter the cash already in it as the opening float.

Who this is for: Cashier Manager Owner
Last reviewed:

Start the selling day by opening a shift on the register: count the cash already in it and record it as the opening float. Sahab then knows how much should be in the drawer when you close the shift.

Before you start

  • A Cashier, Manager or Owner can open a shift.
  • If the company has more than one register, a register list appears at the top of the till. Pick yours first.
  • The owner decides in Configuration Studio → How we close cash whether a shift is required to sell. With Require an open shift, payment stays locked until a shift is open on the register.
  • The first time someone other than the owner gets access to sell at the till, Sahab turns on Require an open shift once; the owner can turn it off afterwards.

Open the shift from the till

  1. Open Overview → Point of sale.
  2. Look at the shift bar at the top of the screen. It shows No open cashier shift and the register name, with Required to sell or Optional depending on the company setting.
  3. Press Open shift in the bar. The Open cashier shift window appears.
  4. Count the cash in the drawer and enter it in Opening float. The field starts at zero; leave it as it is if the drawer is empty.
  5. Press Open & stay on POS. The bar changes to Cashier shift open with the opening time, and you can sell right away.

If a shift is required to sell, you also see Open a shift to continue selling above the items, with the same Open shift button. You can browse items and fill the cart, but payment stays locked until the shift is open.

Open the shift from the shifts page

  1. Open Finance → Cashier shifts and press Open shift.
  2. Choose the Register. If the company has not set up registers, choose the Account you are opening the shift on.
  3. Count the cash and enter it in Opening float. If a shift on this register was closed before, Sahab shows its last closing count under the field so you can compare.
  4. Add a Note if you need one, then press Open shift. The new shift's page opens.

Note: If what you enter differs from what the previous shift on the same register counted at close, Sahab records an Opening variance. Unless it is within a tolerance the company set, someone else, such as a manager or the owner, reviews it. The shift opens either way and selling goes on.

A register in a colleague's custody

If the company uses Individual custody, the register stays in the custody of whoever opened its shift. Anyone else sees the custodian's name in the shift bar, with no open or close button. They cannot sell on that register until the custodian hands it over from the shift page with Hand over custody and the receiving cashier confirms.
