Close a cashier shift

At the end of the shift, count the cash in the drawer and enter what you counted; Sahab compares it with what was expected, and a supervisor reviews any difference.

Who this is for: Cashier Manager Owner
Last reviewed:

At the end of the shift you count the cash in the drawer and enter what you counted. Sahab compares it with what should be there: the opening float plus the cash that came in, minus the cash that went out. Then the shift closes.

Before you start

  • The cashier working on the shift can close it, as can a Manager or the Owner.
  • If a Hand over custody was started and the receiving cashier has not confirmed it, confirm or cancel it first.
  • By default the cashier counts without seeing the expected amount, and the closing section on the shift page is titled Blind close. Only managers and the owner see the expected amount. The owner can change this in Configuration Studio → How we close cash.

Close from the till

  1. In the Cashier shift open bar at the top of the till, press Close shift.
  2. The Close cashier shift window shows the register name. If you are allowed, you see Expected in drawer. Otherwise you read: Count the cash in the drawer and enter what you counted. The expected amount is not shown; a supervisor reviews any difference.
  3. Count the cash and enter the amount in Closing count. The field starts empty and says Count the drawer and enter the amount. If the drawer is empty, type zero.
  4. Add a Note if you need one, such as the reason for a shortage you know about.
  5. Press Close & stay on POS.

The window may also tell you about back-dated collections that were added to the expected cash, or about expenses from this register waiting for approval that were not.

Close from the shift page

  1. Open Finance → Cashier shifts and press the shift's opening time in the list. Shift details opens.
  2. In the closing section, choose how to count: Enter the total or Count by denomination.
  3. With Enter the total, type the amount in Closing count. With Count by denomination, type each note or coin value and how many you have, and Sahab adds them up.
  4. Press Submit count and close.

After you submit the count

  • If the count matches, or the difference is within a tolerance the company allows, you see Shift closed.
  • If it does not match and the company allows recounts, the shift stays open and Sahab asks you to count again, without saying how big the difference is.
  • If a difference remains on the last count, you see Shift closed. The count does not match what was expected; the difference waits for a supervisor's review. The shift stays Awaiting review until someone other than the custodian, such as a manager or the owner, reviews it.

Note: The next shift does not wait for the review; a new shift can open on the register in the meantime.
